UK Riots project was an exercise which helped us practice our visual communication abilities. The main idea of the project was to examine all information given about the various riots occurred in 2011 such as location, damages, time, specific days and therefore create a 3d informational board made out of pins and colorful threads.
After being divided in groups and after analyzing the information given, my group in order to manage to complete the project on time, decided to focus on specific areas and each one of us was responsible in gathering information for the selected area (Birmingham, Brixton, Haringey, Manchester, Wandsworth). As the events were named "Blackberry riots", due to the fact that people used their mobile devices and social media to organize,we decided to create an informational board which would resemblance the worldwide internet connection.
After posting the 5 areas,we also posted the specific locations in which the events occurred. Then by identifying each color thread with one specific action such as red for violence, purple for looting, blue for vandalism, orange for arson and black for death, we connected each action with their location and therefore all the areas together creating an "image" of the united England.
Though because we ran out of time we couldn't manage to present the information in the most effective way. The best example of how we would like the whole board to have been presented was Wandsworth which happened to be my selected area.If you can notice form the pictures on your left the main area is located at the bottom and all the locations within it above, creating in this way a clear visual link without mixing all the colorful threads in a way which would be confusing for the viewer which unfortunately happened with the rest of the areas.
