Another lecturer that my course had the honor to host was Rob Canning who is a composer and network artist.
Through the lecturer's presentation we gained knowledge about the attitude of software and hardware but also copyrights, copylefts and creative common license.
Some of the knowledge gained:
- "Considering the differences between software and hardware, as a user of a software you can also be a developer while as a user of hardware you are not.Talking about copyrights ,copylefts and creative common license"
-"Copyrights exist in order to protect authors of documentation or software from unauthorized copying or selling of their work.A copyright infers that only with the author's permission may such activities take place."
- "A Copyleft, on the other hand, provides a method for software or documentation to be modified, and distributed back to the community, provided it remains Libre."
- "A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use and build upon a work that they have created. CC provides an author flexibility (for example, they might choose to allow only non-commercial uses of their own work) and protects the people who use or redistribute an author's work, so they don’t have to worry about copyright infringement, as long as they abide by the conditions that are specified in the license by which the author distributes the work."
- "Hardware is best described as a device that is physically connected to the computer or something that can be physically touched."
- "Software is a general term used to describe a collection of computer programs, procedures, and documentation that perform some task on a computer system.'"
After the presentation Rob guided us through the use of Inkscape, an alternative and open source graphic editor.
Firstly we were asked to create boxes ready for laser cut which we designed on makercase.com.After saving our boxes we opened them via Inkscape and experimented with different designs as it can be seen from the screenshot below.
A short tutorial which presents some of the important keys of inkscape:
